Why Are More Brands Investing in Private Label Period Underwear?

Brands are putting more money into private label period underwear because the category combines fast market growth, repeat purchasing, product differentiation, and better control over pricing. Grand View Research valued the global period panties market at USD 157.0 million in 2025 and forecasts USD 700.2 million by 2033, a 21.1% CAGR. North America represented 39.3% of 2025 revenue. Private label also lets retailers and lingerie brands use established manufacturing systems instead of developing absorbent textiles, waterproof membranes, patterns, testing procedures, and production lines internally. The commercial opportunity now extends from menstrual underwear into adjacent absorbent apparel, including incontinence underwear, postpartum products, teen ranges, and overnight protection.
The market numbers explain why more buyers are adding the category to sourcing plans. Grand View Research estimated global period underwear revenue at USD 157.0 million in 2025, rising to USD 183.6 million in 2026 and USD 700.2 million by 2033. A 21.1% annual growth rate is high for an apparel category, especially one that sits between underwear and personal care.
North America generated 39.3% of global revenue in 2025, while the United States alone produced about USD 51.0 million, or 32.4% of the global market. U.S. revenue is projected to reach USD 227.9 million in 2033. That scale gives private label buyers room to build specialized collections rather than compete with one standard menstrual brief.
The product mix already shows how specialization works. Brief styles represented about 29.5% of global period underwear revenue in 2025, generating USD 46.4 million. Grand View Research expects the brief segment to reach approximately USD 209.5 million by 2033, with a 21.3% CAGR.
Bikini styles are developing at a similar pace. They generated USD 39.3 million in 2025 and are forecast to reach USD 180.4 million by 2033, representing about 21.5% annual growth. Brands can therefore separate collections by fit rather than treating absorbent underwear as one functional item.

A private label manufacturer can supply several of those variables from an existing production platform. That reduces the amount of technical development required before launch, although the brand still needs specifications, wear testing, wash testing, and production inspection.
Period underwear is more complex than standard panties because liquid management depends on several materials working together. A typical product can use three to five functional layers around the gusset: a skin-contact layer, transfer layer, absorbent layer, waterproof or leak-resistant membrane, and outer fabric.
A change of only one layer can alter drying time, thickness, airflow, absorption speed, or rewet performance. For that reason, a 2026 product brief should define more than fiber composition and garment measurements. Absorbency targets, gusset dimensions, membrane specification, seam construction, and wash performance should also be recorded.
A pair that feels comfortable when dry can perform very differently after absorbing liquid. Product approval needs to cover use conditions, not only appearance and fit.
Private label production gives brands a shorter route to that technical base. Instead of buying lamination machinery, developing absorbent materials, training sewing lines, and establishing laboratory procedures internally, a buyer can work with a factory already producing functional underwear.
The savings are not limited to machinery. Development requires repeated sampling across sizes and absorbency levels. A range containing 5 sizes, 3 cuts, 2 absorbency levels, and 3 colors already produces 90 possible SKUs before packaging variations are added.
SKU control matters because underwear sizing creates inventory fragmentation quickly. Adding only two more colors to that 90-SKU structure takes the assortment to 150 combinations. Private label programs can start with fewer combinations and expand after real sales data identifies stronger sizes and cuts.
A smaller first launch might use 4 sizes, 2 silhouettes, 2 absorbency levels, and 2 colors, producing 32 combinations. That approach allows brands to test demand without placing capital into hundreds of slow-moving variants.
Distribution data also supports a staged launch. Offline period underwear sales generated about USD 102.3 million globally in 2025 and are forecast to reach USD 451.7 million by 2033, according to Grand View Research. The expected annual growth rate is 20.9%.
Online sales were smaller at USD 54.7 million in 2025 but are projected to reach USD 248.5 million by 2033, growing at about 21.3% annually. Online retail is useful for private label because a product page can explain absorbency, sizing, care, layer construction, and intended use without relying on limited shelf packaging.
That education matters because consumers cannot assess absorbency by looking at the garment. Two black briefs may appear almost identical while using different absorbent cores, waterproof layers, gusset lengths, and fabric weights.
Retail pricing also becomes easier to manage when the product is exclusive. A retailer carrying a national brand sells an item consumers may find at several competing stores. A private label SKU uses its own specification, packaging, colors, and bundle structure, making direct product comparison less exact.
Multipacks add another commercial layer. A menstruating customer may need several pairs across one cycle rather than one garment. A 3-pack can combine light, medium, and heavy protection, while a 5-pack can cover several days with fewer wash cycles between uses.
The repeat-purchase pattern is also broader than replacement. Customers may later buy overnight coverage, lighter styles for spotting, different cuts for exercise, additional pairs for travel, or another size after body changes.
Private label therefore gives brands room to build a product family. A period underwear range may later sit beside postpartum underwear, light bladder-leak products, or washable absorbent underwear designed for older consumers. Production knowledge in gusset engineering, absorbent materials, and leak-resistant construction can be shared across several categories.
Material compliance has become more important as the category grows. Period underwear remains in prolonged contact with sensitive skin, so buyers need clear information about textile finishes, membrane chemistry, dyes, coatings, and restricted substances.
PFAS concerns made this especially visible in the U.S. market during the early 2020s. Brands should avoid relying on broad statements such as “non-toxic” unless suitable testing supports the claim. A supplier declaration alone may not provide enough assurance for a retailer making chemical-related marketing claims.
A stronger sourcing file can include material specifications, fiber composition, restricted-substance testing, wash-test records, colorfastness results, and documentation for any antimicrobial or chemical-related claim. Requirements vary by destination market, so testing should be matched to where the product will actually be sold.
European textile rules add another reason to document products carefully. The EU revised its Waste Framework Directive in 2025 to establish Extended Producer Responsibility requirements for textiles and footwear. The European Commission has also reported that roughly 4% to 9% of unsold textiles in Europe have historically been destroyed before use.
Inventory planning therefore deserves as much attention as product design. Ordering 20 colors may make a collection look broad, but excess seasonal inventory becomes harder to justify when waste-management rules and unsold-goods requirements become stricter.
Durability matters for the same reason. A washable product that loses shape, delaminates, or leaks after a small number of cycles creates replacement costs for the customer and complaint costs for the brand.

Sizing deserves separate control because stretch garments can appear forgiving while producing inconsistent fit. Grading from XS to XL is not simply a matter of adding the same number of centimeters at every point. Waist, hip, leg opening, rise, gusset width, and elastic tension interact differently across sizes.
Brands targeting extended sizing need additional fitting rather than enlarging one base pattern mechanically. In a range covering 7 sizes instead of 4, even a 2-silhouette launch creates 75% more size-level inventory before color or absorbency options are counted.
The same discipline applies to teen products. Younger users may prefer simpler absorbency labels, softer elastic, lower garment bulk, and school-day protection. Adult heavy-flow customers may prefer longer rear coverage, higher rises, and higher-capacity absorbent structures.
Overnight products need different geometry again. Extending protection farther toward the back can reduce leakage when the wearer changes sleeping position, but a longer waterproof zone may also increase warmth. Product development therefore involves balancing coverage, airflow, thickness, and drying time.
Sports-oriented designs introduce another set of trade-offs. Lower-profile gussets may feel better under leggings, while higher-stretch shell fabrics improve movement. Excessive compression around a thick absorbent core can affect fluid distribution, so active products cannot simply use a normal period brief beneath tighter fabric.
Private label also gives established lingerie brands an advantage because many production and merchandising skills already exist. They understand fit testing, elastic specifications, size grading, fabric hand feel, garment care, seasonal colors, and intimate-apparel merchandising.
Menstrual-care brands approach the category from the opposite direction. They already understand absorbency communication and customer use patterns but may need an underwear manufacturer for textile engineering and fit. Private label connects those capabilities without requiring either company to build every production process internally.
Manufacturers still need careful screening. A supplier making conventional lingerie is not automatically experienced in absorbent underwear. Buyers should ask how many years the factory has produced functional underwear, which processes are performed internally, how absorbency is tested, and whether leak-resistant materials are laminated, purchased, or subcontracted.
Sample approval should then move through more than one stage. A practical sequence can include prototype fitting, material confirmation, absorbency testing, wear trials, wash testing, size-set approval, pre-production sampling, and random inspection during or before shipment.
Order quantities should also be assessed at SKU level rather than only at total-order level. A factory may quote an MOQ of 1,000 units, but 5 sizes and 4 colors can reduce each size-color combination to only 50 units if the minimum can be divided evenly.
For larger retailers, the same mathematics works in reverse. A 50,000-unit order spread across 6 sizes, 5 colors, 3 silhouettes, and 2 absorbency levels covers 180 combinations, averaging only 278 units per combination before actual size curves are applied.
Private label works best when assortment breadth follows measured demand rather than catalogue availability. Market growth of 21.1% does not remove normal apparel risks such as poor sizing, excess colors, weak quality control, or inaccurate sales forecasts.
Brands are increasing investment because the category now has enough consumer demand to support differentiated ranges while specialized suppliers can provide much of the technical production base. The opportunity is strongest for companies that control specifications, testing, sizing, claims, and inventory instead of treating period underwear as ordinary underwear with an absorbent panel added.
